Worship of Bonga and Kariya
This Santal Patachitra painting is an Natural Colour on Acid Free Paper work made by a Jadu Patua/Chitrakar.
This Patachitra depicted the picture from ‘Santal-Janam-Katha’ series where Pilchu’s children celebrated by building houses, they performed rituals and did the worship of Bonga and Kariya. Worshipping various elements of nature is inextricably linked with tribal society. Here the artist, Sawtal Derekara has depicted one such puja scene in his picture. Here everyone is gathered under the tree (‘Jaher Buto’). 12 spots are cut on the ground with rice powder and the chicken is brought in a special type of basket (‘Torda’ in the Santal language) made of bamboo or cane and worshipped.
