Back to Organic Roots
Reviving Tradition at Bharatpur, Bankura
In collaboration with the Botanical Survey of India, B-CAF organized a transformative workshop in Bharatpur, Bankura, with the Patachitra chitrakars. The initiative focused on rediscovering the traditional art of using organic colours in Patachitra—a heritage practice gradually overshadowed by synthetic alternatives. Through immersive hands-on training, artisans were reintroduced to natural dye-making techniques, utilizing locally sourced plants and minerals. This approach not only restored the authenticity and sustainability of their craft but also aligned it with eco-conscious practices. The workshop went beyond technical skills, emphasizing innovative product development to help the community create contemporary, market-ready offerings. By blending tradition with modern sensibilities, the initiative empowered artisans to explore new economic opportunities while preserving their cultural heritage. “Back to Organic Roots” reaffirmed the significance of sustainable skill development, proving that the revival of traditional practices can pave the way for both cultural preservation and economic resilience.
