On World Heritage Day, the Indian Museum, in collaboration with B-CAF (Bridging Culture & Arts Foundation), brings to you a unique exhibition that delves into the ancestral stories of the Santhal (Adivasi) community—one of the oldest indigenous groups in India.
A B-CAF project documenting Santhal ancestral stories of creation, birth, civilization, and death
Venue: First Floor, Indian Museum, Kolkata
Inauguration: April 18, 2025, at 4:00 PM
On View Until: April 27, 2025 (Closed on Mondays)
The Santhal creation story tells us that in the beginning, the world was covered in water, and only Marang Buru (Shiva) and some lesser deities existed. But who was Marang Buru? A creator, a life-giver, the Great Mountain—a divine force that shaped the world. With no land in sight, only aquatic creatures could exist.
But then, how was land formed?
How did the first man and woman come into being?
How did they learn to cultivate and form societies?
What happened when, for the first time, a husband and wife decided to separate?
This groundbreaking documentation project is an effort to preserve the rich oral traditions of the Santhal community, capturing their worldview, history and belief systems before they fade into obscurity. Through a deep research process involving collaborations with Scholars, storytellers and artisans, B-CAF has meticulously recorded these narratives, ensuring that they remain accessible for future generations. The project also involves the visual representation of these stories through art, traditional crafts, and interactive installations created in partnership with artisans from the community.
Explore these captivating stories of creation, survival, and civilization passed down through generations, through art and oral traditions at this immersive exhibition.
Step into the world of the Santhals and rediscover their timeless narratives.
Join us in celebrating the rich heritage of India’s indigenous cultures!
