FACILITATOR - DIYA NAIDU

Diya Naidu is an Independent Artist based in Bangalore. She is a Choreographer, Dancer, Performer, Facilitator, Arts and Culture organiser and also Directs a collective of independent dancers called the Citizens of Stage  Co Lab which aims to make the dance ecology more sustainable by making dance relevant to the community.

She was head of  Dance Programming at Shoonya Centre for Art and Somatic Practices, a multiarts space in Bengaluru.

As a choreographer, her work has traversed into the area of gender and feminism – violence against women, the role of caste and class in lack of safety for women and the somatic implications of patriarchal penetration ( a word she uses to describe all manner of invasions the patriarchy enacts on all humans regardless of their gender). This solo Red Dress Waali Ladki has shown several times in Delhi, Kolkata and Bangalore as well as recently in Serendipity Arts Festival, Goa. It was curated to perform at Think Big theatre festival – Munich in July 2020. She explores intimacy and touch through her work and finds deep correlations between our deepest needs and desires and our challenges in society and the political realm. This work – Rorschach Touch has performed about thirty shows in Bangalore (several spaces and events), Chennai (Prakriti excellence in contemporary dance showcase), Kolkata – At the Still point festival and Manipal – Manipal University, Milaap festival.

Her latest solo is performed alone for one person for about two hours.  This piece tries to talk to the space between us as humans who live in an increasingly binary world. This solo has shown in Kolkata – At the still point festival, Khoj and Khirkee space in Delhi and Shoonya space in Banaglore.

She is invested in sustainability for dance by deeply rooting it in the daily life of the community. She collaborates with artists all over the world and is currently in her fourth virtual reality project in Switzerland with Cie Gilles Jobin as well as in an Indo-swiss piece about gender fluidity called Ef_femininity which has been touring Europe since 2018 in festivals like Impulse Theatre festival, Dusseldorf and Avingon Festival, Avignon. It has shows all over Switzerland and was curated to perform in festivals in Berlin, Naples and Bologna this year.

She has recently begun engaging in the cultural scene in Africa with the East African Soul train residency in 2019 and it’s hybrid continuation during the pandemic’

She offers workshops to the community around touch and human connection with the hope to transform the energy that created divisiveness. These workshops are becoming more impactful and relevant as the years go by. She has collaborated with the Company Theatre Mumbai to choreograph and perform Khwaab Sa a piece that premiered in Taiwan and then toured extensively for two years all over India and in Singapore.

Before 2014 she spent ten years in and with dance companies like The Attakkalari Center for Movement Arts, Danceworx and Rythmosaic. As a company dancer she performed and collaborated all over Europe and in South Korea. She has an honors  degree in English Literature from Lady Shriram College, Delhi University and is an initiated Animist practitioner.

MONAMI NANDY

Monami Nandy is a senior disciple of guru Sharmila Biswas, having gleaned from her a warm and unabashed style of Odissi. As a senior repertory member of guru Biswas’ Odissi Vision Movement Centre (Kolkata), Monami has danced at major festivals across India and internationally.

In addition to Odissi, Monami is versed in several folk dances of Odisha. She also has a keen interest in the Indian martial art forms of Mayurbhanj chhou (Odisha), Kalaripayattu (Kerala) and Thang-Ta (Manipur). She has honed her abhinaya (dramatic) skills at the Navarasa Sadhana acting course by guru G. Venu (Kerala), and has attended Kutiyattam (ancient theatre form of Kerala) workshops by Amannur Rajaneesh Chakyar. She has also attended body-based movements workshops by Maya Krishana Rao (Delhi) and Preethi Athreya (Chennai) as well as traditional Javanese elements and spiritual dance by Rianto Lanang. Monami uses this knowledge bank of movement methodologies to also inform her practice as a dance movement therapist, mining the potential of dance as a tool for collective well-being by contributing her skills to NGOs in support of LGBT, domestic violence, and mental health issues.

A natural striking presence aside, Monami brings to her performances an intuitive and embodied presence, exuding both power and sensitivity. She is currently exploring the formal language of stylised gestures to find a personal mode of expression for some of the anxieties arising from our contemporary times. Her own works, including the dance-theatre productions UNTIL THE FLIGHT (2017) and Songs of Our Sisters (2023), have highlighted the acute, confounding nature of our shared humanity.
